American 8-ball

Solids 1–7, stripes 9–15, and the black 8. Pot all seven of your group, then legally pot the 8-ball to win.

How it works

The game starts with a break.
Once groups are established, one side plays solids and the other stripes.
Legally pot one of your balls and you keep shooting.
Miss, or fail to legally pot, and your turn ends.
You must hit one of your own balls first — except while the table is still open.
After contact, a ball must be potted or a ball must reach a cushion.

Fouls

Potting the cue ball (a scratch).
Hitting your opponent's ball first.
Failing to hit any ball.
Failing to pot a ball or send a ball to a cushion after contact.
Knocking the cue ball off the table.

After a foul your opponent gets ball in hand — they place the cue ball anywhere on the table.

No two shots. Ball in hand is the whole penalty. If they pot and carry on, that is just a normal turn — the moment they miss, it is over. There is no extra shot owed from the earlier foul.

The 8-ball

Clear your group first, then play for the 8.
Pot it legally in the called pocket and you win.
Pot it early, pot it illegally, or scratch while potting it — you lose.

Settling a tie

If teams finish a group on the same record and beat each other in a circle, nothing on the table separates them. Two ways to settle it.

The lag — the pool version of a coin toss, with a bit of skill in it. One player from each team puts a cue ball on the baulk line and rolls it up to the top cushion and back. Closest to the baulk cushion without touching it wins. Takes two minutes.

A decider frame — slower but it is settled with a cue.

Three teams, two spots (one team goes out): lag, and the two closest go through. Or play it out — the two who lag furthest play a frame, and the loser is out.

Two teams, one spot: just play a frame. No lag needed.

Whatever you decide, go to Results and flip the frame between those teams so the board matches. The alert clears itself the moment the standings resolve.
